They graduate. They don't go pro.
Division I AANHPI women finish college at 97 percent, up from 79 percent since 2002.

Ciena Alipio was on the beam at Pauley Pavilion in February, both arms up, in a home meet against Michigan. In June she graduated.
The UCLA gymnast from San Jose is a two-time first-team All-American on beam and the 2025 Big Ten champion on that event, the night she scored a 10.0. She is Filipino and Navajo. She left with a sociology degree and wants psychology in graduate school.
She had already made the U.S. national team. Most college gymnasts stop after the last NCAA meet. There is no domestic league waiting to draft her.
The NCAA's May 2025 AANHPI recap put Division I graduation rates for AANHPI women at 97 percent, up from 79 percent since 2002. AANHPI men moved from 65 to 88. Combined, Division I AANHPI athletes sit at 93 percent. The latest public Graduation Success Rate sheet has all Division I women at 95 percent.
Soccer had the most AANHPI women on the 2024-25 NCAA sheet, 650. Gymnastics had 136. Basketball had 310 across all three divisions, and only about 80 in Division I as of October 2024.
Soccer has the NWSL. Caprice Dydasco won an NCAA title at UCLA, then played a decade as a pro. She has said she was the only Asian on her UCLA team and, years later, still the only one in her NWSL locker room. Golf and tennis have tours, and a lot of the college faces on those rosters are filed as International. Gymnastics has a packed Pauley night, then a cap and gown.
Kaitlyn Chen made the basketball jump. She finished at Princeton, spent a graduate year at UConn, and became the first Taiwanese American drafted into the WNBA in 2025.
Natalie Nakase walked on at UCLA, played in a pro league that no longer exists, and is now the first Asian American head coach in the WNBA. The NCAA counted 287 AANHPI head coaches across all sports and divisions last year, up from 204 a decade earlier. Most of those jobs never make a broadcast.
Alipio's name is on the wall in the UCLA gym. A roster or a staff job after the diploma is still rare.
