The Asian Games are about to start deciding who gets to Los Angeles

The Opening Ceremony is still eleven days away. The sport is not. On Thursday morning in Nagoya, men’s basketball tips at Aichi International Arena — the first ticketed session of the 20th Asian Games, nine days before the flame arrives at Paloma Mizuho Stadium. From Sept. 10 through Oct. 4, Aichi Prefecture and its co-host venues will run 469 events across 43 sports. Olympics.com says more than 15,000 athletes are expected. The medals will dominate the local papers. The other story is who leaves Japan already holding a Los Angeles 2028 place.

Continental multi-sport festivals have long been warm-ups for the next Olympic cycle. Aichi–Nagoya is also a gate. The Olympic website lists direct LA28 quota paths through results in archery, hockey, squash, surfing, tennis, and triathlon. In sports such as judo, skateboarding, and weightlifting, the Games feed ranking systems that shape Olympic fields later. National Olympic Committees still pick the names that travel. For a curious fan the point is simpler: some of the first Olympic tickets of this cycle will be punched in Japan this month.

Start with squash, because the sport has never been to the Olympics and Aichi–Nagoya is the first continental Games on the LA28 calendar. World Squash’s approved system gives five athletes per gender a place through continental Games gold. The Asian Games singles champions will be the first people in the sport with an Olympic place attached to their result. The Los Angeles draws are tiny — sixteen men and sixteen women — so a Nagoya final is one of the few doors that open before the ranking scramble of 2028.

Hockey works the same blunt way. The FIH Olympic system uses the Asian Games as Asia’s continental championship: the men’s and women’s champions earn an NOC quota for LA28, unless that country has already qualified another way. Archery spreads more places across individual and mixed-team events. Tennis singles champions can earn an ITF Olympic place too, provided they sit inside the world’s top 500 by the June 2028 ranking cutoff. Surfing awards a continental slot per gender to the highest-ranked eligible athlete at these Games. Triathlon results feed the Olympic qualification ranking window that opened in May. None of that replaces the World Cups and championships still to come. It does mean parts of the Olympic map get filled this month, not only in 2027.

Cricket is the other reason Asia’s September matters for Los Angeles, even though an Asian Games gold does not book an Olympic berth. The sport returns to the Olympic programme as T20 in 2028. The ICC pathway runs through World Cups, continental ranking cutoffs, and a 2027 qualifier. Women’s cricket at these Games still starts Sept. 17 at Kōrogi Sports Park; the men follow later. The Games put Asia’s deepest cricket countries under Olympic-cycle lights two years early, in the same province that will also stage sepak takraw, soft tennis, and other sports the global TV package usually skips.

That mix is the Asian Games’ real weight. Olympic sports share a calendar with sports that barely register outside the continent. Japan is hosting for the third time, after Tokyo 1958 and Hiroshima 1994, and the programme still makes room for both. Debuts this year include surfing, padel, freestyle BMX, teqball, mixed martial arts, and virtual taekwondo. The medals table will still lean China, with Japan chasing a home haul. The LA28 story sits beside that table: which NOCs walk out of Gifu, Okazaki, Gamagori, and Nagoya already holding something the rest of the world still has to qualify for.

American sports conversation still tends to treat Asia as something that arrives later — a tour stop, a rights deal, a diaspora audience for a Western league. Los Angeles remains the destination. In several sports that will shape how the next Olympics look, the first real sorting of who belongs there is happening in Aichi this month. Thursday’s basketball tip starts the Games. It also starts that Olympic sorting.
