Overview

This guide sits in the hinge of the Olympic calendar. Milano Cortina 2026 is closed — Norway led the medal table, ski mountaineering debuted in a snowstorm at Bormio, and host Italy filled the podium. Attention now pivots to Los Angeles 2028 (July 14–30), where federation qualification systems are published and national selection criteria are supposed to be public two years out.

It is not a live results ticker. It is the context layer: how quota places actually get earned, which new sports reshape the summer program, and why the next 24 months of World Championships matter more than any single trials meet.

LA28’s American stage changes the product. Flag football and squash debut; cricket, lacrosse, and baseball/softball return. Swimming moves toward SoFi; athletics returns to the Coliseum; badminton lands at USC. For APAC federations — Japan, China, Korea, India, Australia — the pathway math is already live even if the Opening Ceremony is not.

Key Dates

Milano Cortina opens

Winter Games run through Feb. 22 — 116 events, ski mountaineering’s Olympic debut.

National pathways deadline

Many NOCs push federations to publish LA28 selection criteria once IF qualification systems are locked.

Swimming window opens

World Aquatics A/B standards period runs through June 18, 2028 for individual events.

Budapest Worlds

2027 World Aquatics Championships — relay qualification and open-water pathways begin in earnest.

World Cup stroke-50s

New 50m stroke events feed direct LA28 places via designated 2027 World Cup stops.

LA28 Opening Ceremony

Olympic Games through July 30; Paralympics follow on the same Southern California footprint.

What Happened

Milano Cortina wrap

Norway 18 gold; USA 12; hosts Italy deep on the table

Norway topped the medal table (41 total). The United States finished second in golds. Italy’s 10 golds and 30 medals made co-hosting a sporting as well as logistical story.

New winter sport

Ski mountaineering debuts at Bormio

Marianne Fatton (SUI) and Oriol Cardona Coll (ESP) won the first sprint golds; France took the mixed relay. Spain’s first Winter gold in 54 years arrived in a snowstorm.

Asia on snow

Japan’s 24 medals underscored Pacific winter depth

Five golds and a deep bronze haul kept Japan inside the top tier of the table — a reminder that the next cycle’s summer APAC story already has winter context.

Summer pivot

IF qualification systems for LA28 are out

National federations are translating those rules into selection policies. The racing for 2028 quota places is already a planning problem, not a 2028 problem.

How This Tournament Works

Federation by federation

There is no single Olympic trials. Swimming, athletics, badminton, table tennis, and team sports each publish their own ranking periods, continental slots, and host guarantees. Miss the window and the NOC cannot invent a place.

LA28’s new / returning sports

Flag football and squash debut. Cricket (T20), lacrosse (Sixes), and baseball/softball return. Modern pentathlon and weightlifting stay after reform debates — the program is part of the story.

Venues as narrative

Coliseum athletics, SoFi swimming, Dodger Stadium baseball, Pomona cricket, Universal Studios squash — LA28 sells California geography as much as medal counts.

Athletes & Teams to Watch

Stroke-50 specialists

Swimming · Global

New Olympic 50m events create a fresh qualification lane through 2027 World Cup finals — specialists, not just distance stars.

Japan / China table tennis depth

Table Tennis · Asia

Continental and ranking pathways from mid-2027 make national selection as hard as the Olympics themselves.

Badminton ranking climbers

Badminton · Asia / Global

Ranking windows into 2028 reward consistency on the World Tour — the Medalist’s APAC core sport on an LA stage at USC.

Host-country team sports

Multi-sport · USA

Flag football debut and baseball/softball return give Team USA built-in storylines — and quota guarantees other nations must chase.

Cricket T20 Olympians

Cricket · Global

First modern Olympic cricket in Southern California — South Asia, Australia, and Caribbean pipelines suddenly share a Pomona stage.

Strategy & Rules

History & Context

Olympic cycles are four-year machines with a winter hinge. Paris 2024 closed one summer chapter; Milano Cortina closed the winter chapter; LA28 is the next summer exam. Federations that treat the gap as rest lose ranking points; federations that treat it as a campaign arrive with quota math already done.

Los Angeles has hosted in 1932 and 1984. The Coliseum and Rose Bowl return as living museums. What is new is the sport mix — American football’s flag variant, Hollywood-backlot squash, cricket in Pomona — designed for U.S. audiences without abandoning global federations.

Qualification is deliberately federated. The IOC sets principles; World Aquatics, World Athletics, BWF, ITTF, and others write the fine print. That is why “making the Olympics” means different calendars for a swimmer in Tokyo and a badminton player in Hyderabad.

Business & Media

NBCUniversal’s U.S. Olympic rights run through 2036, with Peacock as the every-event stream. Milano Cortina was a live test of European-time dayparts; LA28 will be a primetime home Games — the commercial peak of the current deal cycle.

LA28 is privately financed relative to many prior hosts, leaning on existing venues and sponsor inventory. New sports are also new advertising categories: cricket’s global diaspora, flag football’s NFL adjacency, squash’s compact broadcast footprint.

National funding still tracks medal projections. A published qualification pathway is not just fairness theater — it is how ministries, sponsors, and athletes allocate the next two budgets before anyone stands on a Los Angeles podium.
